Overview & Highlights of Panbari Himal Expedition 6905m
The Panbari Himal Expedition is rapidly becoming the premier choice for alpinists seeking an authentic, high-altitude Nepal expedition away from the crowded trails of more commercial peaks. As a formidable 7000 meter peak climbing candidate (standing at 6,905m/22,654ft), Panbari Himal offers the perfect progression for mountaineers preparing for 8,000-meter giants like Everest or Manaslu.
Panbari Himal is strategically located in the remote Peri Himal range, straddling the border between the Gorkha and Manang districts in Northern Nepal. Just 2 kilometers from the Tibetan border, this peak resides within the legendary Manaslu region climbing zone. Its isolated position ensures that those on a Panbari Himal Nepal venture experience a level of wilderness rarely found elsewhere in the Himalayas.
The journey features the historic Samdo village trekking phase, where climbers immerse in ancient Tibetan culture. The route navigates the complex Fukan Glacier, technical icefalls, and hidden crevasses.
Trip Highlights
- Conquer the Heights: Cross the breathtaking Larkya La Pass at 5,106m, one of the most iconic high-altitude passes in the Himalayas.

On this day you will prepare for the expedition, buy or rent expedition gears if required and you can visit around Kathmandu Valley if interested.
Very early we drive to Dharapani via Besisahar. Roughly the Besisahar is 180km far from Kathmandu which takes 6-7hrs drive. From Besisahar, it takes approximately 3-4hrs drive to Dharapani and Dharapani is 50km far from Besisahar and it is where the Larkya la pass trail joint with Annapua circuit trek.
In total it takes 9-10hrs to reach Dharapani from Kathmandu. We take breakfast on the way, lunch at Besisahar then take another jeep and continue to Dharapani. Oveight at Dharapani.
This is the first walk in this expedition. From here, we leave on foot to Goa through the alpine and vast forest along the Dudh Khola River. There is two ways either through small trekking trail or through road way along the Dudh Khola River.
This day we have short jouey that is only 4hours of walking and stop for tea and snacks at Surki Khola (Kharche). The trail is flat at the beginning and gently up for about two hours up to small kharka through dense forest. Yak-kharka means an open flat space area for settlement of Yaks. It takes around two and half hours from Surki khola to Yak-kharka.
We will continue our progress along the Dudh khola river through beautiful natural sceneries and spectacular landscape. We can also see beautiful mountain views like Mansiri Himal, Purti Himal, and many more amazing mountain views. We also cross Kechakyu Khola Glacier when we are about to reach Bimtang. We continue through the forest and there are two suspension bridges, one is Iron suspension bridge and another is wooden bridge. After we cross the wooden bridge, we follow a small flat river trail and reach Bimtang the destination of the day. Anyway, the trail is amazing and not so difficult.
On this day we have rest and hike to Ponker Tal for acclimatization. Bimtang is a big flat place located at the elevation of 3,700m. From here, we can see many mountains like, Manaslu, Mansiri Himal, Himlung, Purti, Nemjung and Himchuli etc. We recommend Himalayan Hotel, because the owner Gita Gurung of the hotel is friendly and cheerful and best view. She is so kind and open minded. We can enjoy our rest day with relaxing and having fun.
This day is not so long walking distance. So, we can wake up late and start our jouey with no hurry. We can reach in around 2:30 minutes to Phedi at the elevation of 4,360m the destination of the day. The trail is mostly in ascending way. From Phedi, we can see massive mountain views like Manaslu, Ratna chuli, Himchuli, and Mansiri etc. And we can also see the mountains like Himlung, Nemjung, Peri, Kangaru etc at a glance. There are only three small tea houses for oveight accommodation. If the weather is clear, we can see stunning sunset over the mountain range which is absolutely adorable.
Today is the hardest and most adventurous day. We have to wake up earliest in the moing as possible because sometime the weather may not support us and have to face the problem of heavy windy with no good view on top Larke pass. So, we can have a light breakfast and start our jouey to the Larke pass as early as possible. After three & half hours of ascending way up, we reach on the top Larke La-pass (5106m), take a break, grab some energies that we have, click some photos and continue descend. After 2 hours of continue descend, we reach Dharmasala have some snacks and tea and again continue to Samdo the destination of the day. After 2 hours, we get our accommodation center at Samdo. Samdo is a very old Tibetan village with Tibetan culture having amazing mountain views like Samdo peak and many other small mountain ranges. This village is the last village before Larke la pass. Here we can see Gumpa, chorten, mani wall and also available a small pre-school. Samdo is very close to Tibet border. So, they make trading between Samdo and Tibet. In total from Phedi to Samdo, it takes 7-8 hours this day. Oveight at Samdo.
This day is reserved for exploring Samdo and hike around hills as an acclimatization. You can also hike to Manaslu Base camp but it takes long hours of walk and needs a good physical fitness. It takes 8- 10 hours of good hike in average. Samdo is a Tibetan culture influenced community with majestic surroundings by panoramic mountain views. This area covers plenty of hiking places and the people are friendly and kind.
Start trekking through the right side of the Samdo ridge along a small Samdo river. If you are in a good physical shape, you can reach base camp in a day otherwise you can set tents in between and trek slowly another day to the base camp. Trekking terrain is gentle incline throughout the day.
Check all the expedition gears and equipments, take good rest, and prepare for the high-altitude expediton jouey.
The real expedition begins today, you can carry some of your gears and equipments to deposit in the camps. You will traverse through Fukan Glacier using the safety ropes on icefalls and crevases. It takes 3 to 4 hours for physically fit members and 4 to 5 hours for normal beginners. We spend night here for the good acclimatization.
Touch Camp II for acclimatization and retu back to base camp. This is a significant elevation gain rotation which requires strict avalanche awareness throughout the expediton.
This rest day includes weather forcast checking, rest twell, and restore energy.
Wait for good weather and if the weather is preferable, begin the expedition. This day is reserved specially for planning the expedition rotation strategy, allowing the body to adapt high-altitude, and restore energy.
Base Camp to Camp II expedition jouey for summit push. It requires traversing through complex glacier terrain, steep ascends, mixed ice-rock sections, and navigating potential avalanche hazards.
Camp II to Camp III is a critical, high-altitude rotation stage which climbers takes out of the lower base camps into the rigorous glacial high-altitude zones. It requires proper acclimatization and technical mountaineering gear.
Begin as early as possible around 3:00 AM in the moing to avoid the strong winds and unstable weather on the summit point. The weather begins unstable in the afteoon, starts clowds covering, strong winding and become colder in the late afteoon. And hence, begining early is always recommended for the summit day. After summit, slowly retrace town to Camp II.
Continue your way back jouey to Base Camp slowly and carefully. Upon arrival in Base Camp, you can enjoy hot foods and drinks, and enjoy sharing stories of the expediton with the staffs and the expedition group members.
Prepare your all backpacks for retu jouey from the expedition. Enjoy your day relaxing and having good meals after long strenuous expedition jouey.
The true expedition is end and retrace the jouey to Samdo. Here, you can enjoy your successful Panbari Himal summit. It takes 5 to 6 hours to arrive Samdo.
Take your time in the moing to prepare packing your backpacks, enjoy breakfast, and begin your retu jouey late moing to Dharmasala after all preparation done.
Today start trek as early as possible to avoid the strong wind on top Larkey La pass (5106m). It takes 4 to 5 hours to reach Larkey Pass and 2 to 3 hours to reach Bimtang.
Continue retrace your trek back to Tilije recollecting your previous footstep memories.
Take your breakfast, retrace to Dharapani, check out permits and drive back to Kathmand. You will take a Jeep to Besisahar and shift into bus drive back to Kathmandu.
After an adventure expedition, you can take a nice rest in Kathmandu and you can also visit around your location and make some shopping for Nepal’s souvenir and memories.
You will be transferred to the Tribhuvan Inteational Airport. Final departure according to your flight schedule.
