Mera Peak Climbing Itinerary

Upon arrival at Tribhuvan Inteational Airport in Kathmandu, you will be welcomed by our representative and transferred to your respective hotel.

Kathmandu is the cultural and tourism hub of Nepal, rich in ancient temples, monasteries, and historical monuments. After check-in, there will be a trek briefing where the guide explains the itinerary, safety procedures, equipment, and climbing plan for Mera Peak. You can spend the evening exploring the lively streets of Thamel.

This day is mainly for trek preparation and permit arrangements. Climbers check their climbing gear, trekking equipment, and pack essential items for the expedition.

During peak trekking seasons, flights to Lukla often operate from Manthali Airport in Ramechhap instead of Kathmandu. If required, you will drive about 4–5 hours to Manthali and stay oveight there to catch an early moing flight to Lukla.

Early in the moing, you take a scenic mountain flight to Lukla, famous for its dramatic airport surrounded by Himalayan peaks. The flight takes about 25–30 minutes.

After landing, the trek begins toward Paiya (also called Chutok). The trail descends through forests, traditional Sherpa villages, and small streams. The walk is relatively moderate and takes around 5–6 hours.

Oveight at a teahouse in Paiya.

Today’s trail passes through beautiful rhododendron and bamboo forests. The route includes several ascents and descents along narrow mountain paths.

You will cross small bridges and walk through remote settlements where you can observe local Sherpa culture and lifestyle. The trek takes about 5–6 hours.

Oveight stay in Pangom village, a quiet settlement with scenic mountain surroundings.

After breakfast, the trek continues through dense forests and hillside trails. The route gradually climbs to a ridge before descending again.

This area is less traveled compared to the main Everest Base Camp route, so you experience peaceful nature and untouched landscapes. The walk takes about 4–5 hours.

Oveight at Ningsow village.

Today the trail climbs toward Ramailo Danda, offering beautiful views of the surrounding hills. After crossing the ridge, the path descends through forests before reaching the Hinku Valley region.

You will finally reach Chhatra Khola, where the trails from Lukla and the Hinku Valley meet. This day takes around 6–7 hours of trekking.

Oveight stay near the river.

The trail follows the Hinku River, gradually ascending through forests filled with pine and rhododendron trees. Along the way, you may see wildlife such as Himalayan birds and mountain goats.

The valley becomes wider as you approach Kothe, a beautiful settlement with stunning views of Mera Peak and surrounding mountains.

Trekking time: about 5–6 hours.

The trek continues deeper into the high alpine region of the Hinku Valley. The vegetation becomes sparse as the altitude increases.

You will pass through grazing pastures and yak herder settlements. Along the trail, impressive views of Kusum Kanguru Peak appear.

After 4–5 hours of trekking, you reach Thaknak, a small seasonal settlement used by trekkers and climbers.

From Khare, you can see spectacular views of Mera Peak and nearby glaciers.

Trekking duration: 4–5 hours.

After celebrating the summit, climbers descend back to Khare.

After the successful summit, the trek descends along the same route back through the Hinku Valley.

The descent is easier and faster, taking about 5–6 hours to reach Kothe.

The trail climbs again through forests and mountain ridges toward Thuli Kharka.

From here, trekkers can see excellent views of the surrounding valleys and peaks.

Essential Information of Mera Peak Climbing

What to Expect on the Trail

Mera Peak Climbing is a test of endurance rather than technical prowess. The journey begins with a scenic flight to Lukla, followed by a trek through lush rhododendron forests and remote Sherpa villages. As you move toward Mera Peak Base Camp, the terrain transforms into rugged glacial moraines. While the slopes are generally gradual (around 30°), the final 30 meters to the summit involve a steeper snow dome (40–50°) where your guide will fix ropes for safety.

Health and Altitude

At nearly 6,500m, the oxygen level is approximately 47% of that at sea level. Proper acclimatization is non-negotiable. Our Mera Peak itinerary includes dedicated rest days and a gradual ascent through the Hinku Valley to help your body adapt. We recommend:

  • Hydration: Drink 4–5 liters of water daily.

  • Physical Fitness: Focus on cardiovascular training and leg strength 3–4 months prior.

  • Medication: Consult your doctor about Diamox for altitude sickness.

Safety and Weather

The Mera Peak weather is most stable during Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November). Temperatures at High Camp can plummet to -20°C. Safety is our priority; hence, we provide:

  • Experienced climbing Sherpas.

  • Full safety gear (Crampons, ice axes, harnesses, and helmets).

  • Mera Peak climbing from Khare strategy, utilizing High Camp to ensure the shortest possible summit day distance.
