Naar Phu Tilicho Lake and Thorong Pass Trek – 5416m Itinerary

When you arrive in the Kathmandu airport, our staff will be waiting for you to welcome you with a auspicious garland or a typical Buddhist khada. After you are welcomed you will be assisted to your respective hotel in Thamel or Bouddha. In the evening, if time permit, you can visit around the Thamel or Bouddhanath Stupa to see the Nepalese authentic culture and also enjoy typical Nepalese cusine.  

Today is reserved for trek preparation and permits. Your all trekking gears and backpacks will be checked, buy necessary gadgets and gears required for the entire trekking period.  You can also do sightseeing in Kathmandu like visiting  Swayambhunath, Boudhanath Stupa, or Pashupatinath Temple. 

Drive from Kathmandu to Besisahar (760 m) by private vehicle or tourist bus (6–7 hours). From Besisahar, shift to jeep and continue along the Marsyangdi River valley to Dharapani (1,836 m). Dharapani is an important checkpoint and the gateway to the Annapua trekking region.

Trekking begins today. The trail passes through dense pine forests, waterfalls, and traditional Gurung villages. Walking along the Marsyangdi River, you will reach Koto, a quiet village near the entrance of the Nar Phu Valley.

Walking time: 5–6 hours

The route enters a wild and remote valley. You will pass through narrow canyon trails, suspension bridges, rocky cliffs, dense forests, waterfall and small tea houses. Meta village sits on a high plateau with spectacular Himalayan views.

Walking time: 6–7 hours

A shorter trekking day across arid landscapes and yak pastures. You walk through isolated Tibetan-style villages, rocky landscapes, experiencing the unique culture of the Nar Phu region. You can see beautiful mountain views in the surroundings. 

Walking time: 4–5 hours

The trail gradually climbs toward Phu Gaon, one of the most remote settlements in the Annapua region. You will walk along Phu river, ancient monasteries and chortens, stone houses, strong Tibetan culture and enter through a traditional tibetain entrance gate to reach Phu gaun. 

Walking time: 4–5 hours

Acclimatization and exploration day. On this day, you can visit Tashi Lakhang Monastery, experience traditional old Tibetan buddhist influenced houses and culture, hike to Gurusangbo viewpoints which takes 4-5 hours. You can see stunning panoramic mountain views from the viewpoint including Himlung Himal and many other peaks. This rest day helps your body adjust to high altitude. Some interested tourists also hike to Himlung Himal Base Camp which takes 5 to 7 hours to complete the hike. 

Descend through the valley to Naar Phedi Monastery.This monastery provides a peaceful environment and beautiful mountain scenery. This day is considered an easy trek. Mostly descending style along the wide spread pine forests and arid land. The accommodation is limited here, cooked and served by the monks. 

Walking time: 5–6 hours

Climb gradually to Naar Village, a beautiful settlement surrounded by barren Himalayan mountains. This village reflects strong Tibetan culture, yak herding, and traditional lifestyle. Spending time here is peaceful seeing  the stunning panoramic mountain views in the surrounding and the Naar river. 

Walking time: 3–4 hours

One of the most challenging days. Cross the Kang La Pass (5,306 m) with breathtaking views of Annapua II, Gangapua, and Tilicho Peak. Then descend to Ngawal village (3,660 m). Trek gentle ascend style till the pass and steep descend to Ngwal village. 

Walking time: 8–9 hours

Short trek along the upper Annapua Circuit. Manang is a popular trekking hub with bakeries, lodges, and stunning mountain views. This day is considered an easy trek as well. Short and most gentle flat trek. 

Walking time: 3–4 hours

Leave the main Annapua Circuit and head toward Tilicho Lake trail. The trail offers views of Annapua range and Gangapua Glacier crossing small settlements with teahouse options. It is an ideal place to relax and prepare for the jouey toward Tilicho Lake. 

Walking time: 4–5 hours

A dramatic trekking day along steep landslide sections and narrow trails. As you make your way higher, the scenery becomes more dramatic with close-up views of surrounding peaks and deep valleys. Tilicho Base Camp sits beneath Tilicho Peak and offers spectacular mountain views. By the end of the day, you reach Tilicho Base Camp, located beneath Tilicho Peak, where you can relax and enjoy the peaceful high-mountain atmosphere.

Walking time: 5–6 hours

Early moing hike to Tilicho Lake, one of the highest lakes in the world. The turquoise glacial lake lies surrounded by dramatic snow peaks. After enjoying the scenery, descend back to Tilicho Base Camp.

Walking time: 4–5 hours

Retrace the scenic trail from Tilicho Base Camp to Siri Kharka, descending through beautiful alpine landscapes. Enjoy stunning mountain views and peaceful surroundings before resting at a teahouse in Siri Kharka.

Walking time: 5 hours

Today, rejoin the main Annapua Circuit trail and trek toward Ledar (4,200 m). The trail gradually ascends through alpine landscapes with beautiful views of snow-capped peaks, rugged valleys, and glacial scenery before reaching the small teahouse settlement of Ledar.

Walking time: 4–5 hours

Continue gradual climb through alpine terrain to Thorong Phedi, the base of Thorong La Pass. Enjoy beautiful mountain views and high altitude scenery before resting and preparing for the challenging pass crossing the next day high pass. 

Walking time: 4 hours

Today is the most challenging yet rewarding day of the trek. Start early in the moing for the ascent to Thorong La Pass (5,416 m), the highest point of the jouey, offering breathtaking Himalayan views. After crossing the pass, descend to Muktinath Temple (3,800 m), an important pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists. Rest and celebrate the achievement after a long but unforgettable day.

Walking time: 7–8 hours

Today, trek through the dramatic arid landscapes of the Mustang Region to Lupra Village, a traditional village known for its unique Bon Buddhism culture. Enjoy the peaceful atmosphere, traditional settlement, and beautiful desert-like scenery along the trail. Continue trekking to Jomsom (2,720 m), the administrative center of Mustang, where you can relax and enjoy mode facilities after the trek.

Walking time: 5–6 hours

Take a scenic mountain flight from Jomsom Airport to Pokhara, enjoying spectacular views of the Himalayas and deep valleys along the way. After arriving, relax around Phewa Lake and explore the lively Lakeside area with its cafés, restaurants, and peaceful lakeside atmosphere.

Drive back to Kathmandu by tourist bus or private vehicle, enjoying scenic views of rivers, hills, and countryside along the jouey. Upon arrival, check into your hotel and enjoy free time to relax or explore the city (6–7 hours).

Physical Fitness & Experience

This is an demanding, high-altitude expedition. You will be walking for 4 to 9 hours a day across steep, rugged terrain, loose scree, and landslide-prone zones. Prior trekking experience at high altitudes is strongly recommended. Excellent cardio endurance and leg strength are vital to safely cross both high passes.

While the Annapurna Circuit portion offers comfortable teahouses with extensive menus, the Nar Phu section is beautifully raw.
